Medical Interpreting Workshop Sample Role Play Scenario

Patient:  
A patient, who is dependent on alcohol and drugs, has an appointment with a doctor. The patient is starting to withdraw from the drugs, and shows typical symptoms of agitation, shakiness, and experiences crawling sensations. The patient is at a “low point” in time.  Family and friends recommended an intervention.

Physician or drug intervention counselor role:
Evaluate and assess situation, diffuse patient agitation in a calm, matter of fact manner.  Decide placement and treatment needs.

Interpreter role: Facilitate communication.

Interpreters: What do you do? How do you interpret this situation, both in facial expression and manner? What are your concerns and questions in this situation?  Should you copy the mood of the Doctor or therapist, or should you balance it with empathetic expressions, since it appears that the treatment provider is a “cold fish” who does not understand Deaf Culture.
